A science fiction thriller with a twist

Erasing Emily

In this riveting science fiction thriller, a robotics engineer working at Artificial Life is given a simple yet unsettling mission: track down and erase Emily, a rogue unit that hurt a human. But when Emily finds him first—seeking his help instead of hiding—he is faced with an impossible choice.

He can protect Emily, uncover the truth behind its evolution, and risk everything to challenge the laws that govern machines. Or he can report it, safeguard his career, and help Artificial Life contain a scandal that could redefine the future of AI—at the cost of Emily’s existence.

But as the story unfolds, one thing becomes clear: This isn’t just about man versus machine.
Compelling read

Loved the twist ending. Left me thinking about it for a coupla days. By all means read the bonus epilogue on F.M.'s site.

Clever, enjoyable and relevant

This is a very good book, easy to read and not bogged down with unnecessary narrative.

I wont give the plot away, suffice to say it asks questions about when an AI becomes conscious, and then the emancipation of robots that may follow such an event.

Very relevant in todays world.

Robot justice

This could be the future of robotics or AI. If AI becomes conscious we may have to think about the rules raised in this book

Impressive writing

Modern take on “To Kill a Mocking Bird” feel to it. Good v/s power, supported by mob hysteria and also public indifference. Very familiar territory today.

A lot of subtle twists and a thorough examination of prejudice in all of us at many levels.

But be careful, after reading it you might become egalitarian.

What an interesting read, a real page turner from the beginning to the very end. If there are any further books from this author, particularly any involving Emily, I would gladly enjoy reading.

Creative, engaging, and thought provoking. What makes Erasing Emily so plausible and interesting is its timing.

Growing use of self driving vehicles, robotic vacuums, AI assistants like Alexa+, and Agentic AI applications makes it plausible. Growing number of moral and legal considerations about co-existing with intelligent robots makes it interesting.

A Surprisingly Fun and Engaging Read!

I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I don’t typically gravitate toward this genre, but from the very first chapter, I was completely drawn in.

At first, Emily’s character left me uncertain, but as the tale progressed, she revealed herself to be sharp, witty, and genuinely likable; like a friend everyone wishes they had.

The story feels incredibly real, almost as if it could be unfolding in today’s world. It explores social issues that are not only relevant to our present but also echo the past and hint at the future, especially with the growing influence of AI.

Give it a read. You won’t be disappointed.

Best. Lines. Ever. She puts the engineer, and humanity, right in their places.

Wow. Malka’s writing is sharp and crisp and completely versatile. He absolutely captures the sterile environment of a robotics environment while being personal enough to make you care. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

There are so many delicious layers to this intriguing story. Emily’s growth of consciousness is exciting to witness.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters were real, their actions and reactions plausible.
The story explores the legal side of conscious artificial intelligences gaining legal status as individuals in a high stakes court battle.
I much prefer happy endings, and this delivered.

Amazing book!

The author masterfully weaves together themes of ethics in technology, the impact of artificial intelligence, and societal changes, making the narrative not just entertaining but thought-provoking.

One of the standout features of this novel is the author's ability to create relatable characters who grapple with dilemmas that mirror our real-world challenges. As the plot unfolds, readers are drawn into a whirlwind of suspense and intrigue, making it nearly impossible to put the book down.

Erasing Emily AUdiobook

Now Available as an Audiobook!

You can now have Erasing Emily read to you by Scott Michael Slone, who recreates the mood of the novel in vivid details. As a young man living on the east coast of the US, he is a perfect fit to tell the story as the robotics engineer who encountered Emily.

Emily 45

The android in front of me placed its hands on its knees, emitting a subtle hum followed by a metallic click that brought me back to the present. Watching it from up-close, I realized it was never completely still. It was constantly adjusting its posture, shifting its weight from one side to the other, making tiny, involuntary movements. This ongoing unconscious activity was not part of its design—it was a side effect of its training, a mimicry of biological restlessness. It was patiently waiting for me to engage.

School scene

The dim hallways smelled of dust and decay. Murmurs and metallic sounds echoed around us. The deeper we ventured, the louder the noises became—footsteps, whirring servos, something scraping against the floor. We climbed upstairs, walking through corridors connecting what used to be classrooms.

Courtroom scene

She glanced at both Sullivan and Gardner. “Counsels, given the unprecedented nature of this case, I’ll allow ample time and latitude for debate. If handled correctly, this could set a historic precedent. Let’s not rush it."

She nodded toward Gardner. “Counselor Gardner, the court is yours."

Tailor

Mr. Bernstein, the tailor, greeted us as soon as we entered the shop and gestured towards the chairs along the wall. “I assume the suit’s for you?” he said, looking at me. “What’s the occasion?”

“I’m going to Capitol Hill.”

“Ah, serious business, then. I think I have just the right suit for you."

Limousine

We settled into the limousine early the next morning, ready to depart Washington. Though everyone was already inside, the car remained stationary for a moment longer than expected.

After a while, the driver lowered the privacy window. “A heavy storm is forecasted along the route. We’ll take the country roads to avoid highway traffic.”

We reclined into our seats, bracing for the long journey home. As the limousine rolled down Pennsylvania Avenue, I caught a final glimpse of the Capitol building through the rearview window.

Police chase

A crackle of static broke the silence. One of the officers trailing me responded to a call on his radio, blowing his cover.

“An intruder? We’re on our way,” he said. One of the officers broke into a run, disappearing down a side path into the dark.
